Beharry supervisor dies during workplace accident

Mark Gomes, 32, a supervisor with the Edward Beharry and Company Ltd died on Tuesday after he was struck off a truck by pressurized air.

Police Headquarters in a statement revealed that Gomes of Long Pond, Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, was at the company’s Mandela Avenue, Georgetown location supervising the transfer of flour from a pressure tank. The tank was mounted on a truck, which was connected to a silo.

Police said during this process, the pressure tank began whistling and upon investigation, Gomes climbed onto the back of the truck when a hose connected to the tank and silo disconnected, causing the pressurized air to hit him in the face. As a result, he fell to the ground; he was taken to the Woodlands Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident as investigations continue.
