U-19 Cricket: Nandu leads Demerara to victory over Essequibo

Demerara defeated Essequibo by 76 runs in round one of the Hand-in-Hand Insurance Under-19, Inter-county, 50-over competition at the LBI ground, East Coast Demerara, on Wednesday.

Opener Matthew Nandu made 53, Ushardeva Balgobin 45 and Mavendra Dindyal 27 in Demerara’s 162-8 in 38 overs. Jason Holder and Wazim Mohamed picked up two wickets each for Essequibo, who responded with 86 all out in 27.2 overs.

Dwain Dick picked up 3-15 and Nandu and Chaitram Balgobin had two each, while Sheldon Charles topscored with 25 and Nicko Vincent made 12. Nandu was named Man-of-the-Match for his all-round effort.

Round two of the three-team round-robin tournament would take place on Friday (February 12) at the LBI ground with Berbice playing Essequibo. The final round will take place on Sunday (February 14) between Demerara and Berbice.
