Businessman shot, robbed at Eccles traffic light

A 36-year-old businessman was shot to the thigh during a robbery on Thursday while driving out of Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

Police Headquarters in a statement revealed that Nandkumar Bahadur was robbed of $500,000 in cash and his personal documents by two men, who were armed with a gun.

The incident occurred at about 18:00h while the businessman stopped at the Eccles traffic light. Police said the businessman was in the company of his porter when the incident occurred.

According to reports, the two suspects were on a motorcycle and suddenly stopped alongside the vehicle when the pillion rider pointed a gun inside the vehicle and demanded the cash. During the robbery, the suspect discharged a round at Bahadur, hitting him to the thigh and as a result, Bahadur handed over the haversack with the cash and documents.

The two suspects then escaped.

Bahadur is the owner of Kumar Varieties Store located at De Willem Public Road, West Coast Demerara. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is presently in a stable but serious condition.

Investigations are ongoing.
