Pedestrian crushed to death by truck

A 60-year-old pedestrian of Albouystown, Georgetown was crushed to death by a truck on Monday at the junction of the Houston Public Road and Mandela Avenue in Georgetown.

Police said Gansham Cooblall was struck by the left side front of the truck and as a result, he fell onto the roadway and was then ran over by the wheel of the truck.

The truck was being driven by a 36-year-old resident of Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara. According to the police report, after the driver was notified of the incident, he then reversed into a truck behind him, damaging the front of the vehicle.

Cooblall was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said a breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver which revealed no trace of alcohol. The driver remains in custody assisting with the investigation.
