Boy, 10, shot dead by bandits during robbery at Sophia

An 10-year-old boy, who was identified as Anthony Cort, was shot dead on Thursday during a robbery at Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

According to a statement from police headquarters, the child was with his mother two houses from where he resides when two males, wearing face masks and armed with handguns, invaded the property belonging to a 44-year-old businesswoman.

Cort was in the upper flat of the house located at ‘C’ Field Sophia; the bandits approached the victims in the bottom flat and held them at gunpoint.

They were relieved of two cellphones valued $80,000 each; two gold bands valued $100,000; two gold  rings valued $100,000,; one gold chain valued $100,000 and $80,000 in cash.

The suspects then ordered the said victims to the upper flat of the house via a northern door. It was at this point that Cort exited a bedroom and was shot at by one of the bandits to his upper shoulder.

The suspects then ran away, jumped a zinc fence and made good their escape.

One 9MM spent shell was found near the body.

Police said EMT Ambulance Services responded and pronounced the child dead. The body was taken to Lyken Funeral Parlour and is awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article initially stated that Cort was 11-years-old according to information released by the Guyana Police Force. However, the News Room later confirmed with relatives that Cort is 10-years-old.
