The Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) in partnership with Oasis Café and Akamai Trading will host a first Team Golf tournament on Saturday (March 13). The innovative tournament is expected to test a player’s skill to score points for himself and his team, according to LGC Vice-President Paton George.

“You will have a match play format between two teams; within the competition, you will also have a competition where individuals going up against each other. It is a new format, a very exciting format and we are going to be handing out a lot of prizes,” George explained at Wednesday’s launch held at Oasis Café.

Patanjilee Persaud, President of the LGC, indicated that some quality play can be expected, given the caliber of players on show.

“This is going to be an exciting tournament; we expect a very well-challenged golfing tournament this weekend. It is going to be very competitive and the best in the country will compete against each other,” Persaud related.

He added: “This will be a different type of golf; it is a game we normally play on a friendly basis, but not a competitive level so this is taking it one step further.”

Given the course sits on a vast swathe of land, Persaud said it is more than ample space for persons not to be clustered and be in breach of the COVID-19 protocols.

William Walker, the proprietor of Oasis Café and an avid golfer, indicated that match play golf is one of the purest forms of the sport and he expects a tough battle with opposite captain, Brian Hackett.

The prize at stake is G$30,000 for the winning team.

Tee-off is at noon and teams will be selected by Walker and Hackett; registration closes on Friday afternoon. Each team should have approximately 25 players.
