Golden Jaguars players off to DR for World Cup Qualifiers

The local-based Golden Jaguars players, who were selected as part of a 23-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup first round qualifiers later this month, departed Guyana on Wednesday morning for the Dominican Republic.

Guyana’s senior national team will play Trinidad and Tobago on March 25 and the Bahamas on March 30 in the Spanish-speaking nation; it will be Guyana’s first international matches since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The local players, eight of whom were drawn from the Guyana Football Federation’s Academy Training Centre programme, in the company of the technical staff, departed from the Eugene F. Correia International Airport.

They will link up with the foreign-based players in an extended training encampment ahead of the two matches.

To qualify for round two in Concacaf’s qualification process for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Guyana must top its group, which also includes St. Kitts and Nevis and Puerto Rico.
