The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Thursday said that two officers and four ranks are facing disciplinary action, including dismissal from the force, for a breach in operational orders in relation to an allegation of rape.

The ranks, who were stationed in Mabaruma, North West District, in Region One (Barima-Waini) on border duties had become the subject of a police investigation.

The GDF had later convened its own Board of Inquiry (BoI) to investigate the circumstances which led to the allegation of rape being levelled against the ranks.

With the investigation complete, the BOI found that the ranks seriously breached operational orders and were therefore disciplined accordingly.

Four of these ranks have since been dismissed and the disciplinary process against two others are ongoing, the GDF said.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force charged and placed before the court three of the ex-soldiers in relation to the rape allegation.

Police are awaiting advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in relation to the fourth rank.

“Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force are bound by the values and standards of the force and as such their conduct and professionalism are of paramount importance,” the statement from the GDF noted.
