Almost six pounds of ganja found in kitchen at New Amsterdam prison
Marijuana weighing a total of 2465 grams was early Monday morning found within the walls of the New Amsterdam, Berbice Prison.
Director of Prisons (ag) Nicklon Elliott confirmed the find and would only say that it was discovered by ranks who were at the time doing their regular checks.
The police were subsequently called in and the narcotics were handed over to the police.
An investigation is underway but there are no reports of anyone being arrested.
The News Room understands that the ganja was found around 4:30 am in the kitchen of the prison.
Several kitchen staffers were questioned amid claims that one of the cooks might have been involved in smuggling the marijuana into the prison.
