An accident on the Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara in the vicinity of Bounty Farm Limited, on Saturday night, claimed the life of Charles Williams, a 23-year-old of Timehri.

Police Headquarters in a statement noted that the accident involved a white Toyota Allion motor car (PMM 4120), which was being driven by a 27-year-old off-duty police constable.

The driver claimed that at around 20:20hrs, he was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road, when a male who was walking north on the western side of the said road, suddenly ran from west to east across the road, into his path.

The driver said he applied brakes and swerved to avoid a collision, but due to the short distance, the front left side of the vehicle collided with Williams who fell onto the bonnet, windscreen, and then onto the roadway. Williams received injuries to his head and other parts of the body.

He was picked up by the police and public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The car is lodged at the Madewini police outpost. The cop tested negative for alcohol in his system and is presently at Timehri police station under close arrest.  Further investigations are in progress.
