Police are investigating the murder of 68-year-old Sooroojdeo Deochand, known as ‘Sarjie’, who was found in a pool of blood inside his Number Three Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB) house on Tuesday afternoon.
Police Headquarters in a statement noted that the pensioner was found with chop wounds to his left side face, the back of his head, and his left arm, while three of his fingers were severed on his right hand.
According to the police, Deochand lived alone in a two-storey wooden house in an unfenced yard. One of his nieces, who also lives in the area, told the police that she was standing on the public road at around 17:00hrs when she was informed that someone “had chopped ‘Sarjie’ and they must take him to the hospital.”
As a result, the niece and other relatives visited the house when they discovered the elderly man in a pool of blood in the lower flat of the house.
The police were contacted and ranks subsequently took the man to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No one has been arrested.
