Boy, 16, dies in accident; intoxicated GDF Corporal in custody

A 16-year-old boy died at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after he was struck down by a car driven by a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Corporal.

Police Headquarters in a statement noted that the accident occurred on Monday at around 21:45hrs on the Number 6 Public Road, West Coast Berbice (WCB.)

Dead is Lakeram Sirkissoon, of No. 7 Village, WCB; he succumbed to his injuries at around 05:00hrs Tuesday. According to the police report, the driver of PKK 7780 was transporting a male and female occupant; they were heading west along the road.

The GDF rank told police that he saw a pedal cyclist riding across the road from the northern to the southern side and he attempted to swerve right to avoid a collision, but despite his effort, he collided into the rear of the cyclist.

As a result of the collision, the teenager fell and received injuries to his head and other parts of the body. The child was initially taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was treated for injuries to the head injuries and later transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he later died.

The occupants of the motorcar were all treated and sent away. Police said that breathalyzer tests conducted on the driver showed a reading of .70 and .76 micrograms of alcohol in his blood. The legal limit is .35 and below. The driver is in custody as the investigations continue.
