    Two persons died on Wednesday from COVID-19 in Guyana, taking the total number of deaths from the pandemic to 252.

    The latest fatality is a 59-year-old male from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) who died while receiving care at a medical facility on Wednesday, April 07, 2021.

    Earlier, the Ministry of Health announced the death of a 73-year-old male from Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), who also died on Wednesday.

    These two latest deaths mean that over the last eight days a total of 19 persons have died from the virus in Guyana.

    Guyana is now facing a third, more deadlier wave of the dreaded coronavirus, which is rapidly spreading across the country and attacking the younger population.

    According to Advisor to the Ministry of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, the infection is now more transmissible and there has been a rapid increase in infections recorded in Regions Three, Four and Six.

    What is even more worrisome is that this new wave is making the younger population sicker and Dr Ramsammy explained that more young people are showing symptoms of the virus and being are hospitalised.

    All Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 EMERGENCY MEASURES (NO.16), which are in effect until April 30, 2021. This order emphasises:

      the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home;

      the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others;

      and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

    If anyone is displaying any of the symptoms associated with COVID-19, or need any additional information, kindly contact the COVID-19 Hotline 231-1166, 226-7480 or 624-6674 IMMEDIATELY or visit us at www.health.gov.gy
