The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) will host its Novices/Juniors National Championship and Qualifiers on Sunday, April 25, 2021. It will mark the federation’s first tournament since the pandemic struck these shores in March 2020.

Powerlifting started and ended with the Novices in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it will make a restart with Novices amidst the pandemic later this month.

Public Relations Officer of the Federation, Runita White, explained to News Room Sport, that they are unsure of the number of persons who will compete at this event, given the long layoff from gyms and training, and the short notice given to competitors.

Gyms were only allowed to reopen at 50% capacity in October last.

However, White expects there to be a large number of persons attending trials since there is a possibility of an overseas competition later this year.

That overseas competition is the 18th FESUPO/NAPF Pan-American Regional Powerlifting Championships from August 17-21 in Orlando, Florida.

With regards to the event later this month, White, who herself is an athlete, said it is too early to tell what might be the level of competition due to the long layoff.

She further indicated that from a federation perspective, they want to fully adhere to all the guidelines so they can proceed with future competitions.

Weigh-in will be from 06:00h to 07:30h, while the competition will begin at 08:00h.

The location for the event will be announced at a later date.

The registration form and fees can be submitted to Committee Member Martin Webster or payment can be made to the Federation’s Republic Bank account.

After depositing the money in the account, competitors are asked to send images of both the registration form and deposit slip to the organisers.
