An additional 30,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccines arrived in Guyana on Monday. The vaccines arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) onboard Amerijet International.

Guyana, on April 2, received the first 25,000 doses of the Sputnik vaccine after the country purchased some 200,000 doses of the Russian made vaccine at a total cost of US$4M.

The Sputnik Vaccine, like its Chinese counterpart, has a 28-day wait period for the second dose to be administered; the AstraZeneca Vaccine on the other hand requires a three-month dosage interval.

“The vaccines [Sputnik]… have to maintain a very cold temperature, which is minus 18 to minus 20; so we have put all the arrangement in place to make sure that when we receive the vaccine that we maintain that cold chain,” Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony said on Monday during the daily COVID-19 update.

The arrival of the additional doses of vaccines will further boost the country’s immunization programme.

Meanwhile, the minister also revealed that as of Sunday, April 11, 2021, at least 60, 172 persons received their first dose of the vaccine.

Currently, only frontline workers and persons 40-year and older can receive the jab. But the government had stated that the rollout so far has demonstrated that Guyana can and will succeed in vaccinating all persons aged 18 and older.

Former Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, had noted the high enthusiasm for persons to receive the jab with thousands of young people are being turned away from COVID-19 vaccination sites daily because they do not meet the criteria to take the vaccine.

In the coming weeks, Guyana will also pursue access to an even larger amount of vaccines.
