IPL 2021: Punjab Kings survive Samson’s onslaught

Punjab Kings survived an onslaught from Sansu Samson to win their opening game of IPL 2021 against Rajasthan Royals. Chasing 222, Rajasthan managed 217-7 with Samson last man out for a splendid 119 off 63 balls, the first century of the season.

In his first match as captain, Samson struck seven sixes and 12 fours, and received support from Jos Butler (25), Shivam Dube (23) and Riyan Parag (25), but Rajasthan still fell short of the target.

Arshdeep Singh, who defended 13 off the final over, claimed 3-35 and Mohammed Shami 2-33 for Punjab Kings, who got solid contributions from their top order when they batted.

Skipper KL Rahul continued his fine form from last season, smashing 91 off 50 balls, Deepak Hooda cracked 64 off 28 and Chris Gayle 40 off 28. Debutant Chetan Sakariya picked up 3-31 for Rajasthan Royals.

On Tuesday, IPL action continues with Kolkata Knight Riders up against Mumbai Indians from 10:00h.
