Linden poisoning: Baby boy succumbs a day after mother

A 6-month-old baby boy, Malique Newton of Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) succumbed while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Monday morning, one day after his 24-year-old mother, Temeica Sampson, died of poisoning.

The baby’s 8-year- old sister remains hospitalised in a stable condition at the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) where the mother and two children were rushed after she consumed a poisonous substance and gave it to her children. Police in a statement said a post mortem examination revealed that Sampson died as a result of ingesting poison.

The mother, who hails from Wisroc Housing Scheme, Wismar, succumbed while receiving medical attention at the LHC on Sunday.

The 6-month- old had been transferred to the GPHC on Friday after his condition took a turn for the worse.

He died in the intensive care unit between 5:00hr and 6:00hr on Monday.

Police in Region Region 10 have since launched an investigation into the incident.

The investigation is still ongoing.
