Inmates hospitalised following fight at Lusignan prison
Two inmates of the Lusignan prison on the East Coast of Demerara, are nursing chop and stab wounds, following a fight at the penitentiary on Sunday, April 11.
Police Headquarters in a statement noted that remand prisoners, Gerald Jones, 26, of Buxton, ECD and Kaley Roberts, also 26, of Blue Berry Hill, Linden, got into a heated argument at around 19:55hrs.
Police said Jones is housed in Holding Bay 2 and Roberts in Holding Bay 1; Jones allegedly left his Holding Bay and went to that of Roberts during which the fight ensued.
Jones, who was armed with an improvised cutlass, fired several chops at Roberts, who received a wound to his right hand. In retaliation, Roberts, who was armed with an improvised ice picker, subsequently dealt Jones several stabs to his chest.
They were both extracted from the prison and taken to the infirmary for medical attention, during which, Roberts was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further treatment.
He remains a patient at the said hospital and his condition is listed as stable.
The Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Prison Service have since launched an investigation.
