Defending champions Mumbai Indians stoutly defended a total of 152, beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 10 runs in Match Five of the IPL on Tuesday. It meant Andre Russell’s career-best bowling figures could not inspire a win for the Eion Morgan-led side.

Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar was outstanding with the ball for Mumbai Indians, claiming 4-27 as Knight Riders slipped from 72-0 to be limited to 142-7.

Nitish Rana followed up his first game 80 with 57 off 47 (6x4s, 2x6s) and fellow opener Shubman Gill made 33 (24 balls; 5x4s, 1×6), but they were the only batsmen into double-figures for Knight Riders.

Trent Boult, who defended 15 in the last over, finished with 2-27.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians also suffered a batting collapse, slipping from 86-1 at the halfway stage to be dismissed for 152.

Suryakumar Yadav with 56 (36 balls; 7x4s, 2x6s) and skipper Rohit Sharma with 43 (32 balls; 3x4s, 1×6) got the only scores of significance, as Russell picked up 5-15 off two overs, bowling the 18th and 20th overs.

Pat Cummins claimed 2-24 for Mumbai Indians, who are now second on the points table behind Delhi Capitals. IPL action continues on Wednesday with Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bangalore from 10:00h.
