A 50-year-old Guyanese man, who is also a United States (US) citizen, is in police custody after he was allegedly found with 2.036 kilograms of marijuana which was discovered stuffed inside his suitcase at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

A statement from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Tuesday revealed that Joel Cadogan arrived in Guyana on April 12 with three large suitcases and two handpieces.

He cleared immigration and was subjected to a random search by a Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Custom official at the arrival lounge where four compressed plastic parcels of suspected cannabis wrapped in jeans were uncovered in his luggage.

According to CANU, when the remainder of his luggage was searched, several pairs of sneakers were found to have been stuffed with numerous small empty Ziploc bags, and a tabletop scale.

Cadogan was detained and handed over to CANU officials at CJIA where he was arrested and escorted to CANU headquarters in Georgetown.

The investigation will continue and the suspect is expected to be taken to court on Wednesday.

“There appears to be a developing trend of nefarious individuals trafficking presumably novel grades of marijuana into Guyana from the developed world, reversing the traditional trafficking transhipment flow,” the CANU release concluded.
