A soldier has died after he overtook a vehicle and collided with another car along Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown on Tuesday night.

Dead is 36-year-old Brian Mitchell of Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown.

Police Headquarters in a statement said the accident occurred at about 21:15h.

According to the police report, Mitchell, who had his seven-year-old relative in the car, was proceeding west on the road while the other car being driven by Taishan Shankar and carrying a female passenger was proceeding in the opposite direction.

Shankar claimed that while in the vicinity of Help and Shelter on Homestretch Avenue, he saw Mitchell overtake another vehicle and ended up in his path.

As a result, both cars collided head on. Mitchell and the seven-year-old occupant were picked up in an unconscious state by Emergency Medical Technicians and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Mitchell was pronounced dead while the seven-year-old was treated for a broken leg.

Meanwhile, Shankar and the female occupant were treated for lacerations about the body and later discharged.

    Investigations are ongoing.
