Man, 22, kills self after attempting to murder girl, 17

A 22-year-old man has reportedly killed himself after he attempted to kill a 17-year-old girl on Sunday in the vicinity of Fort Island, Essequibo River.

Police Headquarters in a statement noted that the young man was found dead at Morashie, Essequibo River located opposite Fort Island, shortly after he chopped the teenager and her sister. Police did not reveal his name to the media.

According to the police, the teenager and her siblings were traveling from Hubu Koker in their family boat, heading home to Fort Island when halfway into their journey, the young man approached them with his boat and suddenly jumped over into the victim’s boat.

At the time, he was armed with a cutlass and he said to the victim, “all the time you does fool me”, as he dealt her several chops to her head and hand.  The victim’s sister then pushed him overboard and as they tried to escape, he managed to pull himself up and chopped the sister to her left hand.

He was pushed overboard once more during which his cutlass fell into the river.  He swam to his boat and made good his escape.

The teenager was taken over to Fort Island where her family was informed of what transpired. She was subsequently rushed to the Parika Koker and then to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where she was transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital in a stable condition.

The matter was reported to the Fort Island Coast Guard and they went in search of the young man when they discovered him hanging from a tree. His body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
