Venezuela nationals shoot Venezuelan soldier near border

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is currently investigating the shooting of a Venezuelan soldier, allegedly by two Venezuelan nationals in Imbotero, located within the Mabaruma sub-region of Region One (Barima-Waini), on Saturday afternoon.

According to police reports, the shooting occurred at around 14:00 hrs in the community which is in the vicinity of the Guyana/Venezuela border. Preliminary information received indicated that the two suspects and the victim had a prior misunderstanding that resulted in an altercation on Saturday.

During that altercation, the two suspects, known as “Freddy” and “Kendell” shot the victim twice about his body.

Reports indicate that the two suspects fled the scene and escaped across the border into Venezuela, after being pursued by police officers. After they made their escape, the injured soldier was escorted by the police to the Mabaruma Hospital where he is currently being treated. The victim’s condition is regarded as stable. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
