Hammer and cutlass brawl leaves 64-year-old man dead

A Canal No.2 Polder, West Bank Demerara man was on Sunday afternoon chopped to death with a cutlass after he reportedly confronted a man about work he failed to deliver on.

Dead is Omkar Kishundyal, 64.

Police said that at about 14:30 hrs on Sunday, Kishundyal, who was under the influence of alcohol, went to the suspect’s home at Belle West, Canal No.2 Polder, with a hammer. There, Police said, he and began to behave disorderly and threatened to kill the suspect and his family over some work which the suspect’s father was supposed to do at his home.

Kishundyal, police said, ran into the suspect’s yard and began to lash at him with the said hammer.
The suspect then picked up a chair to bar himself from the blows but Kishundyal reportedly wrestled the chair from him.

Police said the suspect released the chair and armed himself with a cutlass. The suspect claimed that he used the cutlass to bar the hammer from hitting him when Kishundyal sustained a cut to his right hand.

At this point, Police said Kishundyal retreated from the suspect’s premises before collapsing some six hundred feet away.

He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and later died, Police stated.

The suspect was arrested and remains in custody.
