Man, 88, crushed by motor lorry on Avenue of the Republic

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 88-year-old Sandy Adonis of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerera who was crushed by a motor lorry on Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown.

The accident occurred on Thursday at around 16:10hrs and the driver, Karan Balbad, also of La Parfaite Harmonie, has since been arrested.

According to reports, an eyewitness told police that the motor lorry, GMM 3568 with trailer TTT 5330 was proceeding south along Avenue of the Republic and came to a stop at the traffic light located at the intersection of Avenue of the Republic and Regent Street.

It was said that a red motorcar stopped alongside the trailer and Adonis reportedly approached the left front passenger side and began interacting with the individual seated there.

The eyewitness told police that as the traffic light turned green, the motor lorry started to move off and the individual in the front passenger seat of the red car, allegedly pushed Adonis who fell backwards under the trailer, which then rolled over his body.

As a result, the elderly man received injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

An Ambulance was summoned and Adonis was pronounced dead. The body was escorted to Lyken Funeral Parlour awaiting an autopsy.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the lorry and no trace of alcohol was found in his system.
