Cutlass-wielding bandits beat, rob Corentyne couple

Two bandits, armed with cutlasses, woke up a #69 Village, Corentyne Berbice couple minutes after midnight on Saturday and robbed them of several pieces of jewellery.

The victims, Amanauth Ragunauth and Samantha Singh, secured their house and retired to bed at around 20:30hrs on Saturday, however, just after midnight, the husband was awakened by a noise and upon looking, he saw two masked men armed with cutlasses, inside his bedroom.

The men demanded cash and jewellery and they subsequently dealt him and his wife several lashes about their bodies with the cutlasses causing them to receive injuries.

The wife became fearful for her life and handed over a gold chain, a gold band and two gold rings valued at $1,150,000, along with a silver chain, a silver band and a silver ring valued at $300,000.

The couple was escorted to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where they were treated. The wife was sent away while the husband remains a patient for observation; his condition is regarded as stable.
