Guyanese Carlston ‘Mozambique’ Harris made a memorable debut in the UFC, winning his contest against American Christian Aguilera by Submission (Anaconda Choke) in the opening round on Saturday evening.
The Brazil-based 33-year-old Harris won the fight 2:52 seconds into the round at UFC Vegas 26.
“When I saw him on his knees I said ‘he’s finished here man.” Harris said after the win. “He give me all the opportunity what I needed man.”
“I was watching the Ref man; I hold till the Ref come; I don’t loose choke like that. Great feeling man, nothing better!”
“Shout out to all Guyanese who watching me from around the world and in Guyana,” Harris said on the live television broadcast.
Harris’ family in Guyana was understandably elated with the victory.
His sister Vanelda Harris, speaking to News Room Sport, said: “We can’t be any prouder of Carlston. We expected nothing less from him because this is his dream come true. He works so hard every day and night and his discipline to his sport is incredible. He deserves all of this! He has worked for this and no doubt he will continue to do so throughout his career.”
The UFC signed Harris in January 2021, and at that time he was ranked seventh among the 583 active pro athletes in the Welterweight division in Brazil.
Harris trains at the Renewal Fight Team (RFT), in Rio de Janeiro, and prior to his entry to the UFC, he had a career record of 15 wins and four losses, beating seven of his last eight opponents.
