Better Hope hit and run: Police Constable turns himself in

A Police Constable attached to the Mahaica Police Station has turned himself in as the driver in Saturday night’s hit and run accident which killed 50-year-old fisherman Navindra Ramnarine of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.

Police had reported that Ramnarine was heading across the pedestrian crossing north to south at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara when a motor pickup, with licence plate number GPP 8699, struck him down. That pickup was being driven by the 24-year-old constable who turned himself in at the Brickdam Police station on Sunday night.

Ramnarine was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Following the report of the accident, the owner of the vehicle – Ashton Barker of Norton Street Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown – went to the Brickdam Police Station at about 18:00 hrs on Sunday.

Just about 15 minutes later, the Police Constable walked into the station to acknowledge that he was the driver.

The Constable has been placed under close arrest at the Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara Police Station as the investigations continue.
