Guyana exceeds 16,000 ‘COVID’ cases; four more die

Four more persons who tested positive for the deadly COVID-19 virus, have succumbed, pushing Guyana’s overall death toll to 355.

Those victims are an 80-year-old man from Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice and a 35-year-old man from Region Five (Mahaica Berbice), who both died on May 20; an 83-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman – both of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) – who both died on May 21.

The Health Ministry on Saturday reported that the victims were admitted with COVID-19 like symptoms but died while receiving care at its medical institutions. Samples were taken from the victims at the time of admission and those returned positive tests.

The latest deaths take the death toll for May to 56.

Additionally, another 111 persons were infected with COVID-19 over a 24-hour period, taking Guyana’s overall cases to 16,014. Those new cases came from 1,052 tests.

The new cases were recorded in nine administrative regions: Region One (one case), Region Two (one case), Region Three (13 cases), Region Four (62 cases), Region Five (four cases), Region Six (nine cases), Region Seven (four cases), Region Nine (one case) and Region 10 (16 cases).

There are now 19 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 117 are in institutional isolation, 1,813 are in home isolation and six are in institutional quarantine.
