Alleged drunk driver crashes into motorcycle, two injured

A 27-year-old driver of a car was taken into police custody on Saturday after he reportedly slammed into two persons on a motorcycle while attempting to overtake another vehicle on the Lewis Manor Public Road, East Coast Berbice.

Those injured are 28- year-old Fazil Hussain of Cumberland Village, East Canje Berbice and 21-year-old Shakeer Batson of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.

According to police reports, the driver, Robin Persaud, was over the prescribed alcohol limit at the time of the incident.

Reports indicate that around 21:30hrs, the victims were riding east along the northern drive of the road, while Persaud, who was driving PVV 218 in the opposite direction, crashed into them after he attempted to overtake another vehicle.

Hussain and his pillion rider received injuries and were transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital; the pillion driver was later discharged.

Persaud was subjected to a breathalyzer test which read 103 micrograms. He remains in custody as investigations continue
