Two men die from COVID-19 as Guyana records 105 new infections

The Health Ministry on Monday reported another two COVID-19 deaths as of May 23, taking Guyana’s overall total to 361 since the first case was reported in March 2020.

The latest fatalities are two males, a 69-year-old from Region 1 (Barima-Waini) and an 86-year-old from Region 9 (Upper Takutu – Upper Essequibo). They both died while receiving care at a medical facility.

The latest deaths mean that 62 persons have succumbed to the disease this month so far, making it the second deadliest month since the pandemic hit these shores in March 2020. Last month, 66 persons died.

Guyana also recorded another 105 new infections over a 24-hour period, taking the country’s overall cases to 16,235. Those new cases came from 758 tests.

The new cases were recorded in seven administrative regions: Region One (six cases), Region Two (25 cases), Region Three (three cases), Region Four (44 cases), Region Five (five cases), Region Six (17 cases) and Region Nine (five cases).

There are now 19 persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 94  are in institutional isolation, 1,755 are in home isolation and four are in institutional quarantine.
