Drunk driver kills pedestrian, flees accident scene on #77 Public Road

An alleged speeding drunk driver fled the scene of an accident on the #77 Public Road, Corentyne/Berbice, on Wednesday night after he crashed his car into a 41-year-old security guard, killing her on the spot.

Dead is Norma Rose of Scottsburg, Corentyne/Berbice; she worked with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) located at Springlands.

Police later arrested the driver, identified as 32-year-old Danny Nanku of Port Mourant. According to a police report, Nanku was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road in his car HC 3098 at a fast rate of speed at around 21:30hrs.

It is alleged that he lost control and collided with the pedestrian, who was standing on the eastern side of the road; the woman was flung in the air and landed on top of the left side bonnet of the car before falling on the parapet.

Police reported that the driver immediately fled the scene while the woman was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital by public-spirited persons in an unconscious condition.

She was pronounced dead. The driver was later arrested at #79 Public Road.

A breathalyzer test was conducted and found that his alcohol level was at 129 micrograms and 116 micrograms.
