Guyanese badminton pair Priyanna Ramdhani and Akili Haynes have qualified to compete in the first Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia, later this year.

According to the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA), Guyana’s qualification was made possible through the world rankings of Priyanna and Narayan Ramdhani, however due to Narayan being over the stipulated Under-23 age limit, the country’s number two male player Haynes has gained the nod.

“Akili is an upcoming national player, who was a bronze medalist at the Carebaco Juniors 2018 and also attended the World Juniors in Canada 2018,” the Association said in a press release.

“Priyanna Ramdhani, who is attending Olds College in Canada on a Badminton Scholarship, played at the Pan American Individual Championships in Guatemala early in May 2021 to help secure the spots. The GBA is pleased with the outcome of the qualification results once again and will be meeting with the GOA and Minister of Sport to finalise funding for their training leading up to the Games.”

The first Junior Pan American Games of Cali 2021 will bring together more than 3,800 athletes from 41 countries who will compete in 39 disciplines. The gold medalist in each sport will automatically qualify for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
