Teenager caught after allegedly robbing taxi driver, accomplice in hiding

An 18-year-old male was caught by residents Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Tuesday night after he and his accomplice allegedly robbed a taxi driver.

Police Headquarters in a statement noted that the 30-year-old taxi driver was robbed of $405, 000 in cash; a Samsung Note 9 cell phone valued at $200,000; a gold chain; a diamond ring and a gold ring.

The armed robbery occurred at around 21:00hrs at Masjid Road, Vryheid’s Lust, ECD.

A police report noted that the taxi driver was dispatched to pick up a passenger at Giftland Mall, Turkeyen; upon his arrival, he picked up two males who requested to be taken to Beterverwagting, ECD.

However, while in the vicinity of Vryheid’s Lust Masjid Road, the male seated at the back seat of the car placed a knife to the victim’s neck while the male seated in the front passenger seat relieved him of the articles before escaping.

The victim alerted persons in the area and a search and hunt by public-spirited citizens of Le Ressouvenir caught the 18-year-old suspect and handed him over to the police.

A search of the suspect unearthed a knife, clothing and duct tape. He was also seen with injuries to his left side head. He was arrested and escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station and then to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is under guard.
