Pensioner dies in New Amsterdam fire

A pensioner of Trinity Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice was killed on Sunday evening after a fire of unknown origin gutted his home.

Dead is Martin Lindey. He was 67.

According to police reports, the fire occurred sometime around 22:55hrs.

The man’s son-in-law, Cheitram Maywahlall, reportedly received a call from the next-door neighbour around 22:5 0hrs informing him that the upper flat of Lindey’s two-storey wooden and concrete home was on fire.

A call was made to the New Amsterdam Fire Station and firefighters rushed to the scene.

When firefighters entered the upper flat, they reportedly found Lindey’s body lying motionless in the dining hall.

He was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body remains at the institution’s morgue awaiting an autopsy.

Investigations are ongoing.
