Labourer found dead after leaving Berbice home to fix bicycle
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 57-year-old Devanand Ramoutar, known as ‘Shorty’, who was found dead inside a trench not far from his Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice home on Monday morning.
A police report noted that Ramoutar, who was described by his wife as a habitual drinker, left his house, at about 14:30hrs on Sunday, June 6, for Adelphi Village East Canje Berbice to fix his bicycle but he never returned.
The wife launched a search for him but it was futile, however, she continued the search with other relatives the following morning, during which her son found the bicycle leaning against a culvert about 12 feet off the Goed Bananen Land Public Road at around 07:00hrs.
According to the police, the son claimed that he did not search the area where the bicycle was found, however, at around 09:30hrs, the wife went to the culvert where she saw a part of her husband’s shirt in a trench next to the said culvert and she immediately raised an alarm.
Ramoutar’s body was later retrieved by the police, who discovered a wound to his left eye. The labourer was pronounced dead at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital; the body is at the Arokium Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
