Parika girl, 12, struck down, killed while crossing road

A 12-year-old girl died on Tuesday after she was struck down by pick-up while attempting to cross the Farm Public Road on the East Bank of Essequibo (EBE).

Dead is Varshanie Ramroop of Parika Façade, EBE. Police Headquarters, in a statement, noted that the young girl had just disembarked a minibus on the southern side of the road and was in the process of crossing the road in front of the minibus when she was hit by the right side front portion of motor pick-up (GXX 7522), owned and driven by Benjamin Parks of Windsor Estates, East Bank Demerara.

Police said the child received severe head injuries; she was picked up by police and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“A notice of intended prosecution has been served on the driver of the motor pick-up. The body of the deceased is presently lying at West Demerara Regional Hospital Mortuary for post mortem,” police said.

The accident occurred at around 15:15hrs.
