Two prisoners disappear without trace from Lusignan Prison

The Joint Services are on the hunt for two prisoners who disappeared without a trace from the Lusignan Prison Quarantine Section on the East Coast of Demerara.

Their disappearance was only discovered at about 07:30hrs on Tuesday during the unlocking of the prison, which was supervised by the Duty Officer and four other ranks.

“The matter was immediately reported to the Officer-in-Charge, Lusignan Prison, David Shepherd, Superintendent of Prisons (ag) who immediately ordered a roll call to confirm the information, upon conclusion it was confirmed,” the Prison Service noted in a press release more than eight hours after the discovery.

The missing prisoners have been identified as 26-year-old Andrew Chaung who was admitted to the penitentiary on April 20, 2021, on remand for break and enter and larceny. His last known address is Lot 73 New Road Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara; and 24-year-old Shazam Kalil, also known as “Boi”.

Kalil is serving life imprisonment for murder and was admitted to the prison on August 19, 2016; his last known address is Lot 53 Sheildtown, West Bank Berbice.

When asked how the men managed to escape, Prison Director (ag), Nicklon Elliot said, “We are currently working on that information.”
