Barber injured in chopping incident at Black Water Backdam

A Barber who left his hometown – New Amsterdam – to work at Black Water Backdam along the Cuyuni River (Region #7), was on Tuesday seriously injured during a chopping incident.

The injured man has been identified as 29- year – old Devon Thompson of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice. Police said while the perpetrator is known to the victim, he has not yet been arrested.

A police statement noted that about 18:30hrs on Tuesday, Thompson was at his camp in his hammock when the suspect, under the influence of alcohol, arrived and an argument ensued.

The suspect armed himself with a cutlass forcing Thompson to flee for safety.

However, the suspect chased and caught up to him and chopped him to his head and right arm before escaping.

The injured Thompson was then assisted by public-spirited persons and escorted to the Bartica Regional Hospital where he arrived one day later, on Wednesday, and was admitted a patient.

He was later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical attention in a stable condition.

Police are currently scouring the area for the suspect as investigations continue.
