A Better Hope, East Coast Demerara man on Sunday night reportedly set his own home afire to get a woman and her children out.
Police reported that Mumtaz Ali, 56, set a room in his house on fire due because of a conflict between himself and his tenant.
Ali had served the female tenant a lawyer’s letter to remove from the premises but she refused.
At around 19:00hrs Sunday, the tenant and her children were selling food when they observed smoke coming from the house.
They claimed that they saw the landlord running from the house into the neighbour’s yard.
The fire department was summoned and managed to put out the fire with only damages being done to the house.
