An accident at the John Fernandes wharf on Water Street, Georgetown on Tuesday claimed the life of 36-year-old Sheldon Wilson, a truck driver of Hand-en-veldt, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
A police report noted that Wilson was driving motor lorry GNN 7207 when he went to the wharf to collect feed from a boat at around 12:30 hrs.
After collecting the feed, he began driving but the truck went over the rails and into the river.
Several persons jumped into the river to rescue Wilson; he was taken out of the truck by a labourer of John Fernandes wharf and later taken to St Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigations are ongoing.
