Meten-Meer-Zorg woman dies in horrific accident

Sherrane Hollingworth, a 56-year-old woman of Fifth Street Meten-Meer- Zorg, on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD), Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara) died after she was struck by a motor lorry on the De Kinderen Public Road, WCD on Saturday afternoon.

According to police reports, at around 14:30 hrs on Saturday, 60-year-old Keith Peters of Ruimzeight Gardens, WCD, was driving a motor lorry bearing the number plate #GZZ 4439 west along the southern side of the road.

Police claimed that Hollingsworth was standing on the northern side of the road and after observing the traffic, she allegedly walked across the road into the path of the vehicle.

Police said the left side front of the lorry crashed into the woman, causing her to fall and receiving injuries about her body.

Police reported that she was picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital in an unconscious state where she was pronounced dead. Video footage of the incident, seen by the News Room, revealed that the woman was almost to the other end of the road when the speeding truck crashed into her and dragged her body before coming to a stop.

Police said the driver tested negative for alcohol in his system; he remains in police custody.
