Brazilian miner robbed of gold near Cuyuni river

A 50-year-old gold miner, who is a Brazilian national, was robbed of a quantity of amalgam gold at around 09:00 hrs on Saturday at the Guana Sand Backdam, near the Cuyuni River in Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni).

According to police reports, the victim reported that he employed three men, who are Venezuelan nationals, to work on his land dredge at the Ghana Sand Backdam.

On Saturday, however, while he was at the work ground, the three workers approached him – one being armed with a cutlass – and ordered him to wash down his dredge.

The miner said that he complied with their orders but while doing so, he managed to run away into the bushes.

Subsequently, he returned to his work site and observed that his precious minerals were washed off.

He then raised an alarm was raised and subsequently lodged a report at the Bartica Police Station.

Police reports indicate that the suspects have not yet been arrested but investigations are in progress.
