Guyana nears 20,000 COVID-19 cases

The Ministry of Health has reported that another 103 people have been infected with the disease, COVID-19 taking the total number of infections recorded since March 11, 2020 to 19,877.

These new cases were confirmed after 897 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were conducted. No additional deaths have been recorded and as such, the total death toll has remained at 462. This month alone, 64 people who were infected with COVID-19 passed away.

The new cases were recorded from: Region One (six cases), Region Three (10 cases), Region Four (41 cases), Region Five (four cases), Region Six (14 cases), Region Nine (22 cases) and Region 10 (six cases).

Men account for 49 of these cases, while the 54 women were newly infected. A total of 9,700 men and 10,177 women have been infected to date.

Additionally, there are 1,739 active cases; 15 of these active cases are patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 1,630 are people in home isolation, five people are in institutional quarantine and the remaining 89 people are in institutional isolation.

Meanwhile, 34 people who were previously infected have now recovered from the disease. The total number of people who have recovered to date is 17,681.
