Omela Singh, the 26-year-old woman who was beaten and stabbed multiple times by Omkar SIngh, her 49-year-old boyfriend, had left him more than one month ago after he reportedly became abusive towards her.

This is according to the young woman’s family members who spoke to the News Room at the Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) house she lived at.

“A month and something she leff and deh by me here (at Parfaite Harmonie),” Omela’s mother, Mini Singh, said on Monday.

Mini related that Omela was the mother of three young children aged two, six and seven years old, and, when she left Omkar, she brought the children with her. She, however, said that Omkar would visit intermittently to drop off food and personal care supplies for the children.

While Omela stayed in the family house, she had started to seek employment so that she could take care of herself and her three children.

On Sunday, while she was away, Mini said that Omkar visited the house.

According to police reports, when the man visited the house, he got into an argument with Omela. It was reported that he hit the woman, then stabbed her multiple times.

Subsequently, Omkar fled the scene while neighbours helped to take the injured woman, who was in an unconscious state, to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Omela was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, but by Sunday evening, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment there.

“… when I go to the hospital, she done dead,” Mini said, unable to hold back her tears.

Meanwhile, Omela’s brother, Ravi Singh lamented that his sister did not deserve to die in this gruesome manner.

“One time them two (Omela and Omkar) fight up and I seh alright ‘It’s good she come and live with she mother’,” Ravi related.

He, however, said that he did not expect that his sister would be murdered.
