Hosts USA successfully defended their Pan Am Indoor Hockey Cup title on Sunday, defeating Canada 3-0 in the Women’s championship game in Spring City, Pennsylvania.

USA had topped the round-robin phase of the five-team tournament, winning all four games, while Canada had finished second with two wins, one draw and a loss.

Rose Hope led USA’s charge in the final, scoring twice (6th and 40th minutes), while Ashley Sessa opened the scoring in the fourth minute.

Hope ended the tournament as the leading goalscorer with 13 strikes, while Sessa had eight, the second most. In the third place playoff, Argentina edged Uruguay 5-4.

Guyana’s Women lost all four of their games, going down 20-2 to USA, 14-0 to Argentina, 13-0 to Canada and 7-1 to Uruguay.

Abosaide Cadogan, who scored a double against USA, and skipper Marzana Fiedtkou against Uruguay were Guyana’s scorers in the tournament.

Guyana had its own off-court issues to deal with even before the games started on Friday last.

Upon arrival in the US, the team lost three players- the experienced Sonia Jardine with an ankle injury, and skipper Gabriella Xavier and goalkeeper Alysa Xavier tested positive for COVID-19.

Short on resources, Guyana had to use manager Princessa Wilkie as a substitute goalkeeper, even though she never even wore goalkeeper gear before.

In the Men’s competition, which featured Argentina, USA and Canada, Argentina defeated USA 4-2 in the final.
