Man who jumped into drain after robbery remanded to prison

Andrew Khan, the alleged bandit who plunged into a drain along Regent Street, Georgetown, after snatching a woman’s handbag, was on Wednesday remanded to prison for robbery.

Khan of Cooper Street, Albouystown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that on June 26, 2021, at Regent Street, Khan robbed Darshanie Persaud of a Samsung cell phone valued at $116,000.

The Chief Magistrate remanded Khan to prison until July 14. According to reports, the victim was walking along Regent Street when Khan snatched her purse, which had her cellphone inside, and escaped.

The victim raised an alarm and public-spirited persons gave chase after Khan, who jumped into a nearby drain to elude them.  The police were summoned and after some time Khan came out of the drain and surrendered.

He was arrested and placed on an identification parade, where he was pointed out by the victim.
