AIBA Three-Star Coach Terrence Poole has been selected to lead a team of four boxers to the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Youth Championship qualifying tournament from July 11-19 in Mexico.

The quartet of boxers would be led by Caribbean champion Alesha Jackman, with the others being Travis Inverary, Wayne Castello and Patrick Harvey.

President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, said the Association is keen on providing opportunities for local boxers to get exposed to another level of competition.

He said the Association is currently working on the getting the necessary funding to ensure the trip is a reality.

“We had said that it’s important to make sure we keep exposing our athletes, and more importantly our younger athletes to international competitions. We’ve seen the fruits of that with Keevin Allicock qualifying for the Olympics,” Ninvalle told News Room Sport.

“This AMBC qualifier is quite an important fixture. As a matter of fact, it would be the first time that we will be engaging in international competition since December 2019 when we participated in the Caribbean championship.”

Ninvalle added: “It would give us a chance to gauge exactly where our young boxers, and I can tell you that they are so excited to get back into competition, as they had been training for some time. We do hope we acquire the necessary support in order to get them to Mexico.”
