An 18-month-old girl, Orinda August, of Potsville, Kwakwani, near the Berbice River in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), drowned in a bucket of water on Sunday evening, according to police reports.

According to information received, the baby’s mother, Amanda Wills, had left her home with her two older siblings, aged seven and 15, to attend a funeral.

Between 17:30hrs and 18.10hrs, the 15-year-old was upstairs with her, while the seven-year-old sibling was downstairs playing.

The seven-year-old later went upstairs to check on his siblings. There, it was discovered that the elder sibling was sleeping. After further checks were made, the baby was found lying head down in a bucket of water.

The baby was pulled out by the seven-year-old, who then raised an alarm. She was subsequently rushed to the Kwakwani Hospital Complex and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police stated that no marks of violence were seen on the exposed part of the body. No foul play is suspected at this time. Police investigations continue.
