    Guyana nears 500 COVID-19 deaths as five new deaths recorded

    Guyana has now recorded a total of 497 COVID-19 deaths since March 11, 2020, following reports by the Ministry of Health of five additional deaths.

    The latest fatalities, as reported by the Health Ministry, are:

    1- A 65-year-old man from Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice), who died on July 11

    2- A 79-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara- Mahaica), who died on July 10

    3- A 67-year-old man from Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara), who died on July 11

    4- A 86-year-old man, also from Region Four, who died on July 11

    5- A 91-year-old woman, from Region Four, who died on July 11

    The ministry said that the patients were admitted with COVID-19 like symptoms, but died while receiving care at a medical institution. Samples were reportedly taken at the time of admission and those subsequently returned positive tests.

    With these new deaths, 21 deaths have already been recorded in the month of July, so far.

    Meanwhile, another 49 infections were recorded over a 24-hour period after 530 tests were conducted. In total, 21,002 cases have been recorded since March last year.

    The new cases were recorded from: Region One (four cases), Region Two (three cases), Region Three (two cases), Region Four (11 cases), Region Five (two cases), Region Six (19 cases) and Region 10 (eight cases).

    There are also 1,405 active cases. These include 11 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 76 people in institutional isolation and 1,318 are in home isolation.

    And, 47 people who were previously infected with COVID-19, have now recovered.
